“A grassroots voice of rebellion”- AllMusic, 2014

Founded in 1979 by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, Tinariwen is made up of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of Northern Mali. Their music is performed in the traditional West African music guitar style known as assouf that originated from the “great bend” region along the Niger River, between Timbuktu and Goa. Their songs are sung in their native language, known as Tamashek.

Merging their sounds from traditional Tuareg melodies and rhythms; such as the shepherd’s flute, the one-string fiddle or imzad, tinde’ drums with contemporary western instruments such as the acoustic guitar and bass- makes their enigmatic and masterful skill of transforming their stories into music highly revered and loved by fans and fellow musicians, such as the Red Hot Chili PeppersRadiohead’s Thom Yorke, Carlos Santana and Robert Plant.

Their story through the ages

Their world-wide recognition and acclaim doesn’t only come from the bravura of their music, but also Tinariwen’s journey through political eras of The Tuareg Rebellion in the year 1990, where some of the members participated in as rebel fighters. After Ag Alhabib and musicians of the Tuareg Rebel community’s discovery of the radical chaabi protest music of Moroccan groups like Nass El Ghiwane and Jil Jilala; Algerian pop rai- and western music, they performed throughout the country and vowed to record music for free for anyone who supplied a blank cassette tape.  Their earlier days before the collective was fully formed had brought the band together in the midst of a nine-month military training period and post-war, they decided to pursue music full-time.

To this current day and age, Tinariwen has 7 albums that have sold millions world-wide, a Grammy Award for Tassili – Best World Music Album in 2012, headlined major festivals around the world, including Womad Music Festival and Glastonbury and performed at 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in South Africa, alongside Alicia Keys, Shakira, John Legend, and the Black Eyed Peas.
