Winners, plus what we thought about Short + Sweet Stand-Up & Song 2016

THE winners of Short + Sweet Stand-Up & Song was announced at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) last night. After four nights of performances, top-scoring contestants took home prizes from the festival. This is the ninth edition of Short + Sweet Malaysia, and the third edition since both Song and Stand-Up Comedy became part of the festival.

Admirably, KLPAC has created a new award at the festival in honour of actress Samantha Schubert, who this year passed away after a battle with cancer. The Samantha Schubert Award will run over the next five years to remember Samantha’s legacy as a remarkable actor and a respected thespian.

Several burgeoning talents participate — from respected traditional Malay musicians Asmaraloka (who played live in Farah Kamsari‘s presentation), to writer and theatre performer Ui-Hua Cheah, Short + Sweet’s lineup this year has its fair share of draws.

Its talents however remain unpredictable. This year, our team believed the onslaught of girls singing about boys was too much too fast for a full sit-through, even if the stand-up segment appeared highly competitive. Familiar faces such as Harresh A. U. and Haikal Idris delivered the laughs, and the former went on to win two of the category’s biggest awards.

Short + Sweet is one of those things that could potentially have lasting appeal if there were tighter curation. We hope that next year organisers raise the bar or put on a more diverse selection of material — there’s really no need for 22 acts. The seats will fill themselves as the competition grows more sengit.

Here are all the winners from Saturday night.
