Only two candidates this year for Best Actress as local critics push on with Malaysia’s most serious film awards

THIS year’s edition of Majlis Pengkritik Filem Kuala Lumpur (MPFKL) earlier today revealed its nominations. Setting itself apart from last weekend’s Festival Filem Malaysia (FFM) — the country’s widest-reach film awards show — MPFKL’s top nominees are Redha (7), Jagat (7), Love Supermoon (5) and Ola Bola (4). All four films are MPFKL’s only nominees for Best Picture.

Also notable is the fact this year’s Best Actress category only contains two nominees, namely Nadiya Nisaa for Love Supermoon and doppelgänger June Lojong for Redha. In the Best Actor category, Jagat‘s young orphan Harvind Raj scores a nomination along with screen partner Jibrail Rajhula.

The unofficial awards organisation, spearheaded by film writer and critic Fadli Al-Akiti, has been building a reputation after continued disappointment over FFM’s structure, credibility and politics.

MPFKL was formed in November 2011 as an avenue for analytical film viewers and critics to recognise homegrown creativity. Its membership spans bloggers, film writers and and entertainment editors, currently comprising the likes of respected journalists Bissme S. and Daniyal Kadir, as well as box office analyst, musician and actor Aidil Rusli.

Not obligated to air on television or pander to sponsors given its nature as an online film awards, MPFKL also makes it a point to provide its thoughts on the film industry from year to year.

Fretting over the lack of quality in last year’s output, MPFKL issued a statement on its website claiming that the local industry will head towards a “total death of Malaysian cinema” if current attitudes towards recognising local work continue for much longer. On top of celebrating mediocrity and perpetuating poor filmmaking, the industry continues to be plagued by rushed work and a general ignorance for literature, according to the post.

MPFKL, 5 September 2016

The awards famously refused awarding Best Picture to any of its nominees three years ago, when Nik Amir Mustapha‘s Kil took home top honours at FFM.

Releases between September 2015 and August 2016 — a total of sixty-one Malaysian films which made skim wajib tayang — were evaluated by this year’s panel. Results will be out early next month, but in the meantime have a look at these nominees.
