Chart Chat: ‘The Kid From The Big Apple’ Gains Traction, ‘Ola Bola’ Tumbles Out Of Top 10

IN another strong week at the box office for local films, last week’s new entry BoBoiBoy: The Movie climbs up to #2 with RM3.53 million from 107 screens, for a total of RM7.63 million after two weeks of release. Munafik in comparison collects another RM2.06 million from 111 screens and now has RM11.32 million after three weeks.

Both films have already proved themselves to be some of the biggest box office hits in recent years. However, Jess Teong‘s The Kid From The Big Apple is perhaps the standout entry on this week’s chart.

The Kid From The Big Apple debuted two weeks ago in limited release, playing on just 12 screens. Admissions grew steadily, and this weekend the film expands to 66 screens, amassing RM1.05 million.

The Kid From The Big Apple made headlines when it first bagged major awards at the 7th Macau International Movie Festival. After a slew of positive mentions including a Yahoo! review which deemed it a “skilfully woven family drama”, the film is set to reach even greater heights.

On the other end of the spectrum, Ola Bola looks set to conclude its strong run at the box office after losing more than half of its screens. It falls to #12 this weekend with RM156,000 from 33 prints for a grand total of RM15.90 million.
