Khairul “MeMe” Azmir Shoib Thrills In Visual Art Exhibition ‘VDA Freakshow’

BEING fairly new to the Kuala Lumpur art scene, I didn’t know what to expect when I headed over to Minut Init last Friday.

The night saw the launch of an exhibition entitled VDA Freakshow, an insane collection showcasing the progressive work from graduates of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (2000-2003).

Upon circling the room, there’s evident range in the artists on exhibit. It’s a fairly wide scope encompassing the soft “Nubian Queen” white pencil drawings of Jackie Gomez to the hard, edgy, and organic paintings of Fabian Subash, and everything else in between.

Most notable would have to be the prodigious wall piece done by Khairul “MeMe” Azmir Shoib. The consistency of his pieces is worth marvelling at, bringing life and a fragment of innocence into each of his grim characters.

“Sorrow Sorrow come back tomorrow,” chants MeMe’s fictitious ultramarine blue fairies.

Judging from the detail used to construct such beings, one would be forgiven for thinking the artist was commissioned by Michael McDowell for a new movie adaption.

MeMe’s callous strokes of black ink seem rather gentle, lying destitute beside chasms of white space.

One can only imagine the time it took to compose the delicacy of Nocturna 11, complete with grass, insect wings, leaves, flowers, branches, plastic and pin. The constructed fairy, residing on a 29 x 42cm paper, is simply bewildering, making for an astonishing work of art.

There might be no real unifying theme for this latest collection at Minut Init, but there’s a sense of reunion, of the camaraderie established among these alumni who in themselves are the titular “freaks” of the exhibition.

Come down to Minut Init to check out the exhibition, but take note it’s the Freakshow’s turn to host Drink & Draw this Wednesday. They’ll be boozing up and stroking from 8:00pm onwards.

VDA Freakshow will be on display until 12 March 2016 at Minut Init, 27, Jalan SS 21/37, Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.

  1. Oh, y’all leave fred alone, helen and trey. He’s prolly got a “fat and pspoacyhthic wife” at home, “thrashing him within inches of his life…”LOL — (ps. it’s a joke on the theme; not a personal attack against “fred”.)

  2. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  3. I am glad that Shirley and his ignorant friends are feeling free to express themselves. Some of us might have been lulled into think that we were in post-racial America, but the rantings of Shirley, et al, is showing us that way too little learning about other and self-examination as occurred among whites over the last forty-odd years.College cannot help them, nor can Christ. Racism is a mental-disorder that appears at epidemic levels among some whites these days. God bless Howard Zinn- he spoke truth to power.
