AFTER 3 years of musical silence, our homegirl Yuna finally releases material from her upcoming album.
“Places To Go”, a cut from upcoming record Chapters spans 3 minutes 32 seconds and has been out for five days now.
In an interview with Fader, Yuna explains that the new song is about growing into the person you’re meant to be, and facing the challenges that lead you to this ultimate version of yourself.
Boasting lyrics penned by the singer-songwriter herself, “Places To Go” also serves as a lament against an all-work life.
I feel like work is overbearing me
And what is life when you are not even living?
DJ Premier produced the lush track but this isn’t the first time Yuna has worked with a high-profile producer. Everyone knows she worked with Pharrell Williams on “Live Your Life”, which introduced Yuna to American audiences in 2012.
Much like her debut US single, “Places To Go” is also a ruminative take on R&B, opting for skips, chilled vocals and subdued melody lines over the bold and colourful songwriting apparent on her Malay-language records.
The song is the first official release from Chapters, out May 20th.
Chapters is also set to feature the much-hyped “Crush”, an as-yet unreleased track featuring Usher and Ebro Darden. The album marks her fourth full-length release since debuting in 2011 with the album Decorate.
